(SportsNetwork.com) - The red-hot Los Angeles Kings will try to extend their winning streak to a season-high seven games when they visit the Edmonton Oilers for Sundays clash at Rexall Place. The Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference and 20 points out of a playoff spot, have been playing well lately, winning two straight and seven of their last 11 games. Taylor Hall notched the game-winner at 2:31 of overtime in Edmontons most recent victory, as the Oilers downed the visiting New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday. Edmonton scored three unanswered goals to top the Isles in OT. Sam Gagner took the puck off Islanders defenseman Brian Strait in transition through the neutral zone and deked past a sliding defender to fire a shot that deflected off Halls stick and past Evgeni Nabokov into the net. Philip Larsen and Ryan Smyth both lit the lamp in the third period and Ben Scrivens turned aside 32 shots for the win. "Id rather we didnt wait until the last four minutes of the second period to get going," Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said. "We have been preaching the way to play and it wasnt until near the end of the second that we understood what we needed to do and we carried it on to the third." Smyth moved past Wayne Gretzky to tie Glenn Anderson for first place on the Oilers all-time power-play goal list with 126 tallies. Edmonton is 2-1-1 on a five-game homestand that ends tonight. The Oilers are 12-15-3 as the host this season. The Kings have won six in a row, matching a run from Dec. 2-14 for their longest winning streak of the season. The last five wins of the surge have come since the NHL returned from its Olympic break late last month. Another win on Sunday would give the Kings their longest winning streak since taking nine in a row from Jan. 21-Feb. 6, 2010. Thanks in part to its recent hot streak, Los Angeles is still six points ahead of Dallas for third place in the Pacific Division. The top-three teams from all four divisions make the playoffs, while the remaining two spots in each conference are wild cards. The Kings picked up their most recent win Thursday night in Winnipeg, as L.A. kicked off a three-game road trip with a 3-1 decision over the Jets at MTS Centre. Mike Richards and Dustin Brown each netted second-period goals, giving Jonathan Quick and the Kings all the support they would need for the victory in Winnipeg. Alec Martinez added a power-play goal later on to sew up the win. Quick was lightly tested, but aided the cause by stopping 17-of-18 shots. "In the third we kind of slowed down a bit and maybe sat back a bit," Richards said. "But I thought we played well. We didnt do much with (the puck), other than kept it simple and got back to the net with it." The win improved L.A. to 17-12-3 on the road this season. The Kings will complete their trip tomorrow night in Calgary. The Kings have won both meetings against Edmonton so far in 2013-14, but this marks the first encounter of the season at Rexall Place. L.A. has won four straight and six of seven overall in the series and the Kings have claimed eight of the past 10 meetings in Edmonton. The likes of John Daly and Ernie Els both chalked up major wins in their first seasons as full PGA Tour members, a feat that proved out of the reach of Woods, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. So who put together the best set of results as a rookie? Rory McIlroy, 2010Although he did not consider himself a rookie, McIlroy played his first full season as a PGA Tour member and enjoyed a successful campaign highlighted by his astonishing win at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he narrowly made the cut and shot 66-62 over the weekend to blow away a world-class field. Rory McIlroy 2010: P16, 1 win, 5 top 10s, 4 MCs He finished third at The Open despite following his opening 63 with a wind-battered 80 at St Andrews, and he was a whisker away from joining Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson in a play-off at the PGA Championship.McIlroy enjoyed five top-10 finishes in his 16 starts with only four missed cuts, although he is the only player in this page to have missed out on the Rookie of the Year award, with Rickie Fowler getting the nod instead.Ernie Els, 1994Like Daly three years previously, Els made his major breakthough in his first season as a PGA Tour member when he edged out Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie in a play-off at the US Open. Ernie Els 1994: P 11, 1 win, 4 top 10s, 1 MC The smooth-swinging South African made only 11 starts in the US as he balanced his commitments to the European Tour, and he missed only one cut while claiming a runner-up place at the Buick Classic - a week before his US Open win - and two further top-10 finishes.Jordan Spieth, 2013The next next big thing enjoyed a prolific rookie campaign which featured a handsome victory over the vastly-experrienced Zach Johnson at the John Deere Classic, two weeks before his 20th birthday.dddddddddddd Jordan Spieth 2013: P23, 1 win, 9 top 10s, 5 MCs In 23 starts on the PGA Tour, Spieth failed to make the weekend only five times and posted nine top-10 finishes, claiming the third of his three runner-up spots at the season-ending Tour Championship. His performance in Atlanta lifted him to seventh in the FedExCup standings and earned him a captains pick for the Presidents Cup, where he won two points out of four to help Fred Couples side to victory.Tiger Woods, 1996Hello world was how Woods announced himself to professional golf, although he hardly set the world alight in his debut among the paid ranks, finishing in a lowly tie for 60th at the Greater Milwaukee Open. Tiger Woods 1996: P8, 2 wins, 5 top 10s, 0 MCs Just four tournaments later, Woods collected the first of his 79 PGA Tour titles to the delight of the fans at the Las Vegas Invitational, and win No 2 arrived shortly afterwards in the Disney Classic.Five top 10s in eight starts, with no missed cuts, and Woods was all set to provide the most serious threat to the record 18 major titles of Jack Nicklaus.John Daly, 1991More known for his prodigious hitting than for winning tournaments until he burst onto the golfing world with his sensational victory at the PGA Championship, when he scraped into the field as ninth reserve and blitzed the competition by three shots in Indiana. John Daly 1991: P33, 1 win, 5 top 10s, 12 MCs The Wild Thing was hardly a model of consistency over his 33 starts that year, missing the cut in 12 tournaments, but he did notch four top-10 finishes including a third place at the season-ending Tour Championship.Unfortunately for Daly, his best performances came too late to earn a call-up to the US Ryder Cup team, and he was also overlooked for the 1995 contest despite winning The Open earlier that year.Upgrade to Sky Sports now and get 12 months half price.
