Hublot has released another not-so-subtle sapphire novelty. This time the shape is 45mm x 14.4mm MP-11. This is a bright blue sapphire crystal with a 14-day power reserve. Our expectations for Hublot will not be lowered.

Hublot first launched the Sapphire Big Bang in 2016. Since then, we’ve seen a steady stream of Hublot Sapphire rainbow releases: purple sapphire, blue sapphire, orange sapphire, yellow saxem, green saxem, and now we have ice blue — or “glacier blue,” according to Swiss headquarters say. I call it artificial Paraiba tourmaline.

Since its launch as the HUB9011 movement platform, the MP-11 has been available in a variety of case materials. It has a power reserve of 14 days thanks to seven series barrels arranged horizontally below the time display. You can read how many days are left in the reserve on the display to the far left of the tandem barrel. Transmitting energy from the horizontally aligned barrel arbor to the vertical gears that control the hour and minute displays requires the use of a 90-degree spiral worm gear, visible at 10 o'clock. The balance wheel is located on the other side of the dial, at 2 o'clock.

Hublot often makes watches that are both unobtainable and unwearable for most watch enthusiasts. I think Hublot actually performs best when it comes to executing crazy MPs made from some shocking materials or highly complex mechanical configurations. These launches are no longer just another tasty watch in what we think of as a mid-size watch arsenal, but a lesson for all of us on how to appreciate innovation without being personally offensive. In fact, I enjoy finding things that are aesthetically objectionable—it's a mental exercise in understanding my own tastes. It's about honing the skill of appreciating things without actually wanting to wear them. Like Rick Owens inflatables or a giant frilly Molly Goddard dress. I would never wear these things, but I adore them in spirit and think of them often.

No, this watch isn't for me, but I would absolutely love a giant colored crystal watch for its sheer bravado. In fact, it looks a bit like a giant, very expensive giant blue G-Shock. If I saw this ice blue MP-11 in a Miami nightclub, I would admire its aqua glow and be secretly jealous that I wasn't part of the Hublot $100,000+ watch Illuminati.
